Continuation from last blog...

Sorry I left the last blog without finishing the story. Well, I don't have much time now so I will try to wrap it up and keep it short. We leave in 2 hours to go back to Bangkok.

On the island... Our first night we went to the only restaurant on the island. They gave us the menu's and the prices were ten times more expensive than what we have been eating. When we had checked the menu the day before deciding whether or not we would stay they showed us the Lunch menu, which was already more expensive than what we normally pay. So anyway for dinner we ordered one dish and shared it. It was not very good. We decided we would just eat lunch there and skip dinner from then on. The next day we tried lunch and it was pathetic. We ordered two rice dishes that were so small and not very good that there was no way they could justify their prices. So we decided to survive on our snacks and hopefully find some coconuts.

The second night Jose spent an hour opening a coconut on the beach. I wasn't sure it was worth it but when he got it open we tasted it, and wow it was good. We were trying to be very secretive about it because we didn't want to be charged by the staff for it. I guess they can carge someone for eating one of their coconuts.
The coconut was very filling. Jose was very proud of his job.

Most important part of the island, the spiders!! On our first night when returning after our dinner, I found a huge spider in the bathroom. We were trying to decide how to get rid of it and then I saw another one outside of the bathroom door. Then I found another one next to the bed!! Then we saw another one and had to get out of there. We went to find the staff of the island and they were all getting ready for bed and in their towels. We were trying to explain to them our problem and they were telling us... no worry, they are not poisonous, just babies. NO WORRY! I have only seen spiders that big in a zoo!!! We asked if those are the babies how big is the mother?! They said there is no mother. I don't know much about spiders but we didn't buy that. So, they sent 3 young boys to the room with us and they went in with their shoes in their hands while we stood outside. We could just hear them smashing their shoes around and counting... 1, 2, 3, 4, OK all gone. We were not satisfied so we asked to change rooms. We had to go back and speak with a manager that did not speak much english but we managed to have him give us a new room. There was no shortage of rooms. There were only 4 guests on the island. So in our new room we thought we were safe until I looked up and saw an even bigger spider!

This time we decided to deal with it on our own. We got ready with a shoe holding it close ready to smash it. Then decided that wasn't a good idea. Then we found a long stick outside and thought we could smash it with that. We decided that wasn't a good idea either. So we were sitting there watching it. Then we got the idea to tie a candle that was in the room to the end of the stick and hold it close to the spider. So we did and it worked. Well at least we couldn't see it anymore. It went out a crack in the cealing, we hoped.
We figured the rooms were full of spiders. Though we asked the other couple on the island if they had spiders and they didn't. They were paying a lot more though. So we toughed it out through the nights. Somehow we got used to the spiders. We didn't like them but we got used to killing them at night. The worst part was midnight though. The power only worked from 6pm to 12am. So we would be constantly checking to see how much time we had left. The first two nights I did not sleep so well. There were lots of creepy sounds outside.

So other than the spider and the food situations the island was great! During the day boats would drop people off to spend the day on "our" beach and then between 3pm and 4pm they were all gone again. So the beach was all ours! The way the beach was shapped you could see the sunrise on one beach and follow the beach around for the sunset.

One of the nights a group of around 40 Germans were dropped off. They ate a huge dinner in the restaurant. In the morning they were gone. We thought it was strange. There was really no reason to go to that island unless to enjoy the beach. We were glad though.

So we decided not to stay as long on the island as planned. The staff didn't like us because we didn't eat in the restaurant and complained about the spiders. But we guess those are some of the reasons noone stays there.
We came back to the mainland and stayed four more nights. So here we are after our fourth night. Getting ready to go back to Bangkok. We don't want to go to Bangkok!! It's too hot there!! We have been taking it easy and drinking lots of coconut and mango shakes!

Yesterday was the first day of the Thai New Year party (13th-17th). Today is calm but yesterday was crazy!! Everyone was in the street throwing water. There was no way to avoid it so we bought water guns to defend ourselves. They are not so great against a bucket though. They also mix water with a white powder and spread it on peoples faces saying happy new year. So yes we were covered in white paste. They love to do it to the foreigners the most.

Well, I'll have to say goodbye to my blog for now. I don't know if we will have much time to be on the internet while in Bangkok. So thanks to anyone that read and sorry for my [not so great] writting!

Jeanne and Jose,
We have loved your blogs so much. The pictures have all been truely wonderful. We can't wait to see all of them along with the stories that go with them.
Your travels and experiences will most assuredly be with you for your life. I myself am jealous and want to spend time on one of those beaches. It seems so long ago that you left on the adventure but I am sure the time now seems like it has been just a minute. That is life. I hope you both can sit and collect thoughts in your journals while everything is still fresh in your minds.
Love You,
Mom
