Thank you to those who have visited and read my blog!
Burma has kind of fallen out of the mainstream news in the last week. I hope that my blog and others can be a small reminder of what is happening there. The people of Burma bravely and peacefully stood up against their military dictatorship, risking their lives and the world briefly paid attention but that is not enough. They have been cut off from communicating with the outside world by their military. As soon as the images stopped coming out of Burma the media turned their heads. If their is no money to be made from a story it disappears. We can not let that happen.
Some may ask... Is it really that important that we help Burma?
Yes, it is. Burma may be a small country but what happens there is important not just for Burma but the rest of the world. For decades the regime has been able to hold power and commit atrocities because the outside world has payed very little attention. They have just ignored the outside world and employed force at home. They don't care if the U.S. puts sanctions on them, tells them they can not have visas to enter the U.S. They don't care. China provides economic aid and arms giving them their power and that is all they need.
Now that the Burmese people have stood up against this regime and shown the world how they feel, the world can not turn its back. We have seen images of the brutality against its own citizens. How can we ignore that? If we allow this military dictatorship to once again push down its people with violence we are sending a very clear message to future dictators that they can also succeed.
