The wife, daughter and son-in-law of Burma's military ruler, General Than Shwe, are reported to have left the country. It is said that his wife and daughter have left to Singapore and his son-in-law to Dubai. An Oslo-based radio station said that Kyaing Kyaing, the wife of Than Shwe, had arrived with other family members in Singapore, the elite’s favorite destination for shopping and hospital trips. Than Shwe is said to be in the new capital, Naypitaw, with other junta members. He is believed to have traveled to Singapore a few months ago for medical treatment.
So, while this family has been able to take trips to Singapore for medical treatments and shopping trips, they leave the people of their country with no chance of having access to healthcare, living in absolute poverty. Now, the family is being protected in Singapore while innocent people in their country are being kidnaped in the middle of the night, hunted and murdered. The real families of Burma are being torn apart and monks have gone missing.
Families not having the recourses to care for their children are forced to leave them. One of the photos I posted above, of the children in red, is from a safe-house on the Thai-Burma border. These children had to be left by their families. I think that Than Shwe's family should be held captive until he steps down and turns power of the country over to its rightful leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.
You can see a video of the wedding of Than Shwe's daughter above. It's said to have cost around $50 million... In the meantime pregnant women have been crossing the border into Thailand, committing small crimes to be put in prison just to be able to have help with birthing their child.
Gambari has not yet commented on his visit to the country and his two visits with Aung San Suu Kyi. Above is a picture of their meeting on Oct. 2. She does not look well. I do not know how Gambari found a smile to put on his face. I don't think I would have been able to.
