Well, I have not written about Burma in a while and I feel bad for that. It's only a small gesture of trying to be one more voice for its people so I should try to write more often. The least I can do today is write a short post acknowledging the loss of life Burma has just experienced with the cyclone that hit the country. It is said that the loss of life could reach or pass 10,000. The people of Burma have gone through so much already with their struggle against the junta, this was the last thing they needed.
My concern for the country now is that any financial aid entering the country will only be taken advantage of by the military. I think it's safe to say they wouldn't use it to help their people.
There are groups of people ready to go into the country to help but some groups, such as DART (Disaster Assistance Response Team), have not been given permission by the military government. Does that sound like a government that is planning a "road to democracy"? Sounds more like a government that is happy to have so many people dead or stranded from the cyclone so that they can not vote in there May 10th elections.
With the demonstrations in Burma last fall and this storm, Burma has had some better news coverage than they have been given in the past. Maybe there can be some hope that more people will learn about the country... it's they least the outside world can do.
